| What
is "orthodontics," and why do people get braces?
Orthodontics is the discipline
in dentistry where crooked teeth are aligned properly.
The end result is a beautiful smile!
When is the right time for
braces?
Orthodontics can be done at any
age, even for adults. An ideal time for placement of
braces is between 10 and 14 years of age, while the
head and mouth are still growing and teeth are more
accessible to straightening.
What kind of braces will I
have to wear?
Generally there are two types
of brackets that are placed on the teeth. The traditional
metal type or the white ceramic or plastic type. Invisible,
clear braces have recently become available.
How
long will I have to wear braces?
That depends upon your treatment
plan. The more complicated your spacing or bite problem
is, and the older you are, the longer the period of
treatment, usually.
Do teeth
need to be extracted prior to orthodontics?
Sometimes, the amount of teeth in one's mouth are more than the amount of space that your mouth has to accommodate all your teeth. In these circumstances, a decision is made to either extract teeth, expand the arch or reduce the width of the teeth(stripping). Each individual is unique and it is impossible to know what treatment option is the best to correct the crowding of the teeth without an assessment. In conclusion, sometimes it is necessary to extract teeth to achieve an ideal bite and a beautiful smile.
How
important is dental hygiene during orthodontics?
It is very important to keep
your teeth as clean as possible during active orthodontic
treatment. One should brush after every meal and floss
daily(at the minimum). Food can become trapped by the
brackets and it can lead to decay underneath the orthodontic
brackets or band. Also, this could lead to discolouration
(staining) of the teeth underneath the brackets.
Do I have to avoid any foods
or personal habits?
Yes. You have to be careful not
to eat sugary or sticky foods. Food can become caught
in the braces and if its not removed, cavities will
be the end result. Also, you will have to cut your food
so that you don't dislodge the brackets.
